Until 2002, Holy Trinity's interior was very traditional, including wooden pews and a wonderful old organ. However, the organ was beyond economic repair; the pews were uncomfortable and inflexible, and the heating system had simply passed away. So the Space Project began: an ambitious £1.1m vision for a warmer, more contemporary and more welcoming space - not only for congregation members, but also for Ripon's community.
Our church has a long history of being reordered to meet the changing needs of the congregation and the community. So we moved out of the church as the builders moved in, and for just over a year we met in the nearby Catholic church and in a school while our building was transformed at a cost of £1.1m - raised from within the congregation.
A 10% tithe was set aside to support similar projects in the developing world.
A huge amount of the redevelopment's manual work was done by members of the congregation,
of every age - from fundraising and publicity to stripping the church out to selling the pews to raise money; fitting the new kitchen, planting the gardens, painting the interior, and much, much more. You can see a photographic record of our journey by opening one of the PDFs (right).
Our church and crypt are now used by the community far more than ever before, and we are able to open the church up with a much broader and frequent programme of events.
