One of the most successful musicals of all-time, Godspell is based on the Gospel of Matthew, re-enacting parables and scenes from the life of Jesus in an
emotional and energetic way. Essentially about the formation of a community - led by Jesus, with the help of the John/Judas character - it has an upbeat ending showing the community of disciples ready and able to carry forward the lessons they have learned.
One of the longest-ever off-Broadway productions, it ran for 5 years before reaching Broadway itself, totalling 2,600 performances between 1971 and 1977.
Several songs from the show, including Day by Day , became chart hits. The show, written by then-college student John-Michael Tebelak and Stephen Schwartz of Pippin , and more recently Pocahontas and Prince of Egypt fame, went on to win rave reviews and a Grammy Award for Best Score.
