We don't mean to rub it in... but actually, we do.

Match details:
Holy Trinity CC won: 252 for 4 off 35 overs
St John's: 160 for 7 off 35 overs
HTCC won by 92 runs and regained the cup.

Last game of the season! HTCC's skipper won the toss and decided to bat. I think he knew something the rest of us didn't (see later). Before we started, all the players stood round and Chris led us in prayer, remembering the untimely death of Brian Surr's wife (the reason for the Challenge Cup) and the current serious illness of Jude Graham, son of HTCC player Richard.

Martin Pearman and Chris Crow opened for HTCC and set off at a good pace, scoring 37 runs quickly before Martin top-edged a full toss ("You've got to go for them," he said later) and we lost our first wicket. It would be tedious of me to describe the next stand. Chris and Captain Richard, I am sure, would like me to - but I'm not that sad! Suffice to say, they plundered the bowling - putting on a record club stand of 174 runs before Chris was out on 97. Wilf Gowing (the church's answer to W G Grace - in a look-alike contest, not playing!) came in and walked a quick 17 before succumbing. In came Dan Hetherington, hit a mighty four, then got out trying to repeat the act. Tom Pearman helped the skipper add a few more before we closed the innings on 252. Richard was on 99 not out. Like I said, he must have known something about the pitch and the opponents' bowling before we started. A good score and some excellent batting gave us what we knew was an almost unbeatable total.

After a super tea, St John's started their innings. Very tight, accurate bowling by Johnny Coates and Tom Pearman virtually sealed the game in the first 6 overs... Although Matt Shillitto (playing against us, for once!) hit a fifty, and there was some spirited batting by other members of St John's team, they never looked likely to get to our score. Johnny Coates (2 wickets), Joel Webster (2 wickets - Oh, and by the way, he got himself a new bat at a car-boot sale), Tom Pearman (1) and Dave David (1) all bowled well, ably supported by John Falkingham, Captain Richard, Chris Crow and Dan Hetherington. There was some excellent fielding (amazing considering the age of some of our team), with special mention to Martin Pearman and Johnny Coates, also helped to make a victory likely. St John's finished on 160.

Many thanks this season to Chris Crow for arranging games and teams in a very difficult season (weather-wise!). We would also thank West Tanfield CC for the use of their ground - now considered to be our home pitch.

Captain's vs Chairman's, 26.8.07

Ocean's Eleven... sorry, Captain's X.

Match details:
Captain's X ('Young boys') won with 150 for 7 off 29.1 overs
Chairman's X ('Old Boys') 148 for 7 off 30 overs
All donations to HTR's link projects overseas.

After winning the toss, HTCC old boys decided to bat. Some tight early bowling saw Rob Thew getting out cheaply but Wilf Gowing and Martin Pearman added 29 in quick time and seemed to have the measure of things. However, they both fell in successive overs. Chris Crow came in and looked set for a big score. Richard Graham unfortunately didn't trouble the scorers' little grey cells too much, and was soon back on the steps of the pavilion. In came Chairman Richard to aid Chris. 20 quick runs later Chris was given out LBW - he trooped off (not happy with the decision) but there was no doubt that the youngsters were bowling and fielding very well.

Ian Gouge came in and this time (see last report!) hung around, scoring 12 valuable runs and putting on a 33-run partnership with the chairman. However, Ian was out LBW to Tom Pearman (in the wickets again!) - with a nasty-looking lump on one knee thanks to a whack by the ball. The team desperately needed to up the scoring rate. In came Dave David and together with the Chairman added 50 runs in the last 6 overs before Chairman Richard retired after reaching his 50. John Falkingham came in for the last few balls and achieved the remarkable feat (for him) of being not out at the end! Dave David added a few more runs before holing out on the last ball. Mention should be given to some excellent bowling by Dan Hetherington and Matt Shillitto - but well-supported by all the other bowlers. The keeper did well too! Who is he?

The youngsters opened strongly, scoring at 4 an over despite some good bowling by Joe Pearman and John Falkingham. 'Limpet' Tom Pearman and new-boy Tom Illingworth had added 38 for the first wicket before Richard Graham bowled Tom Illingworth for 7. Dan Hetherington came in and looked at ease before seemingly looking the wrong way and getting bowled by Ian Gouge for 3. The wrinklies felt that the game was beginning to come under their control. Captain Richard Grime had other ideas. Despite being tied down by some excellent bowling by Dave David he steadily increased the run rate. Limpet Tom was eventually out to a cracker from Dave for 36. Another excellent contribution by probably the club's best all-rounder this season. This only brought in Matt Shillitto, who helped Captain Richard continue to pile on the runs. They were now ahead of the run-rate and the old boys were looking desperate - well, hardly any of us had shaved. A good piece of keeping by Martin saw Matt stumped off the chairman's bowling (the only bright bit of his bowling!!) but in came James Neale, who made 15 quick runs and kept Captain Richard company. Despite losing the captain (he had to retire once he had got his fifty, 54 to be exact), Alex Pearman and James Neale in the space of a few overs, Jack Illingworth held his nerve and hit the winning runs in the last over.

A great game - well attended - lots of fun. A very special thanks to all those who contributed to and helped prepare tea - it was brilliant. We think we have collected about £95 for Trinity's link projects - many thanks to all those who gave donations. Thanks to everyone who played or supported us - we will try to make this an annual event (mainly because the chairman wants revenge!!)

vs Macclesfield Parish CC 19.8.07

Match details:
Venue: Ripon Grammar School
National Christian Cricket Cup
HTCC: 195 for 3 in 35 overs
MPCC - 72 (we think!), all out in 23 overs

Despite a phone call from Tanfield at 10.25am withdrawing the availability of their ground, we managed to browbeat the wonderful Grammar School headmaster (thanks, Martin!) into letting us play there instead. Having checked the ground and following the Chairman's very optimistic weather forecast (he's just come back from Majorca...), Captain Richard borrowed some chalk paint from Studley (shh!), managed to find exactly the right piece of wood in his garage, and marked out another pitch.

Macclesfield Parish were happy to play, won the toss, and put us in! I ask you - where is the Christian message in that decision? Chris Crow and Tom Pearman started really well and went along at four an over. By the 20th over, despite still being in an unbroken partnership, the captain decided it was time to hit the accelerator. Chris and Tom did this until, bizarrely, on 97, Chris got caught going for a big hit. Or did he? Chris walked off thinking he was out - but it was only later that we found out that our opponents had thought Chris had retired after getting his 50! The player had dropped the catch and told his teammates, too! A shame, because Chris was going really well at the time. I'm sure he's changed his glasses!

Ian Gouge came and went (sorry Ian, but that's what happened!) and in came Chairman Richard looking to get a few runs and cement himself on the top of the club's batting averages. Oh, foolish man! You can always rely on your opponents but never trust your own team when umpiring! (Only joking, Joel - I'm sure the ball would have hit the wickets - you haven't recently borrowed Chris' old glasses, have you?)

Anway - the Chairman made a few quick runs before being given out LBW. Enter Captain Richard. After many lusty blows (including an impressive six onto a nearby roof (I hope Martin's not reading this, Richard) Captain Richard and Tom added about 80 runs for the third wicket in only 7 overs. It was a very good knock by Richard but a real classy one by Tom, who now heads the batting averages.

After the tea interval (thanks to the ladies for preparing this), Macclesfield set about running down our score. However, some very tight bowling by newcomer Jonny Coates and old-timer Johnny Falkingham soon had our opponents well below the run-rate. A succession of bowling changes saw wickets tumble. Richard Graham will probably remember his very long (and high) over, but he still managed to capture two vital wickets. All the bowlers chipped in and finally Joel got a wicket. Unfortunately, Joel, you still need a few more - take a look at the bowling averages...! Newcomer Dan Heatherington took two wickets as did the 'creaking' Chairman. We think they were all out for 72 (guess who forgot the Club's scorebook) so we won by approx 123 runs. This was a very sporting match and Macclesfield Parish must be congratulated on the way they played the game.

vs St George's, Leeds 22.7.07

Match details:
Venue: Ripon Grammar School
National Christian Cricket Cup
St George's won by 7 wickets
HTCC 67 all out; St George's 68 for 3 (with 6 overs to spare)

Where do I start? Let's be honest - our batting was poor even allowing for the fact that St George's bowled extremely well and the pitch was exceptionally slow (though it behaved itself remarkably well given the weather conditions). We lost the toss and were put into bat. Unfortunately we made a bad start when hero from his last game, Martin Pearman, went early closely followed by Chris Crow. Both were honest about playing poor shots.

Chairman Richard and Captain Richard tried manfully to repair things for a few overs but then Captain Richard fell to an LBW decision and we were suddenly in a lot of trouble. Chairman Richard hung around like a limpet for several overs without really troubling the comotosed scorer. By the time the Chairman was out (like a fool he actually tried to score a run - silly man!) wickets then started to tumble like the all-too-familiar England collapse. Special mention to Tom Pearman who played well to reach 18 not out on a difficult pitch.

Our total of 67 was never going to be enough, but we knew we had to try to pressure the opposition's batsmen. Excellent bowling by Dave David and Joel Webster (amongst others) made St George's sweat a bit, but - in fairness - we were never really in it after posting such a low score in our innings. St George's reached the total with several overs (and batters) to spare. A very disappointing result because we had the team to win the game. Poor shot selection when batting certainly undid us but perhaps a lack of games and match practice was the main reason. Never mind - still a few more games to play - let's see if we can improve our batting so that it matches the commitment we show when we bowl and field.
- Richard Langley, Chairman

vs South Parade Baptists 8.7.07

Match details:
30-over National Christian Cricket Cup Match
HTCC won by 3 runs with 2 balls to spare
HTCC 123 for 7 (Langley 48 no; Grime 19; Bell 18 no)
South Parade 120 all out (Yelland 52; Grime 3 for 26)

What a game! First we have to pay homage to the fact that South Parade only had 9 players. It seemed like they had 11 when they were fielding!

Richard Grime (our captain) lost the toss and we were put into bat. In the end this probably helped us. After losing opener Dave Thew early (bowled round his legs whilst he was checking the geology of the clay pitch surface), Chris Crow and Captain Richard got the scores moving (for a while).

At 31 Chris realised he had the wrong sunglasses on too late and holed out to a good catch. He was not happy when he walked off in the opposite direction of the pavilion (enough said!). Chairman Richard Langley came to the wicket needing a few runs (there's a joke there somewhere - someone help me out!). Captain told chairman to get himself in whilst the captain then got himself out- 35 for 3!

New boy Richard Graham came in and added 20 runs with the chairman before being run out. Joel Webster was psyched up and ready to lay bat to ball but decided to play chicken with the fielders and ran himself out (he tells a slightly different story!!). Suddenly we were 55 for 5 and in a little trouble with not too many overs to go. Tom Pearman came in to join the chairman and they added 30 runs fairly quickly before Tom was bowled. After surviving a very close LBW appeal first ball, John Falkingham had had enough after the second LBW appeal and walked off to lay down in a dark room. He should have borrowed Chris Crow's sunglasses!

With just 5 or so overs to go in came big-hitting Steve Bell who, with the chairman, set about the bowling as if they had eventually remembered what game they were playing. They added over 30 runs and got the team to 123, at least something to bowl at.

After a cracking tea (many thanks to the ladies who organised it), South Parade came out to do battle. Well, play cricket - same thing really. David and Goliath ought to have played cricket; it would have been much more interesting. Bet Goliath wouldn't have worn a helmet (captain??). Anyway, they made a good start, hitting 20 off the first 5 overs. Tight bowling by Joel Webster (he tells me he is not that tight when getting rounds in so the drinks are on him next time we are all in the bar!) and Tom Pearman kept our opponents on the back foot, behind the run rate. Yelland played very well and looked a class act - scoring runs to all parts of the ground.

Tight fielding and further good bowling by rookie Jack Illingworth, Captain Grime and old-boy Chris Crow (it's all right, folks, he had changed his glasses by then!) meant that South Parade had to score at more than 7 an over on a tricky wicket. They were doing just that but a good over by Tom Pearman and an excellent last over by Captain Grime saw us home with 2 balls to spare. South Parade's Yelland hit a classy 52 but it wasn't enough. If they had had 11 players it is likely that they would have beaten us but in fairness we had some of our regular bowlers and batsmen missing too.

This great game, played in a competitive but friendly atmosphere, was enjoyed by all with everyone making a contribution. The weather has meant that we have had few games this year, but each one has been a cracker! Bring on St George's for a place in the NCCC semi-final!
vs St Thomas, Sheffield 3.6.07

Match details: Holy Trinity won by 3 wickets. Scroll down for pictures.
Man of the match: For overall fielding and batting display - Martin Pearman.

We started a bit late, but Crowy still felt we could get 70 overs in before midnight - and he was right, just!

St Thomas' - 137 for 8 (35 overs)
Holy Trinity - 138 for 7 (34.2 overs)

St Thomas' batted first. Some accurate early bowling by Tom Pearman and Matt Shillitto had the vistors pegged back at 18 for 2 after 8 overs. This set the pattern for the next few overs, with tight fielding and good bowling restricting the visitors' chances. However, a decent stand took place for the third wicket and this was only broken in the 22nd over at 77.

Dave David was miserly with his bowling (but that's just like him!) and some excellent catches, none better than Ian Gouge's in the deep, had the vistors at 122 for 6 in the 33rd over. Their innings eventually finished at 137 for 8 with Richard Langley and Rob Thew combining to run out their batsman on the final ball. All in all an effective bowling and fielding display from a team that was very different from the one last year.

In reply, we started steadily, knowing that runs would not be easy on this slow pitch. Their Aussie bowler, in particular, made it difficult going for just 16 runs off his 8 overs, swinging nearly every ball. Martin Pearman held the side together with John Martin (7) and Richard Langley (5) both getting out cheaply. Chris Crow (22) and Martin Pearman added 42 for the third wicket and appeared to be cruising. Martin (35) was eventually out at 84 for 4 but we were still well on top. Despite a few wobbles at the end Matt Shillitto (30 n.o.) got us home with 4 balls to spare.

The match was played in excellent spirits and was an encouraging display and result for the team.

Next Game - Home NCCC match v South Parade Baptists June 17th

St Thomas' had a remarkable man who played throughout with his back to the bowler   Crow tentatively wonders about a decision.

A quiet prayer of thanks for having eventually decided on the stretch trousers.   St Thomas' were found to have an unfair advantage when they wheeled out a giant man.

He was beginning to regret those oysters at tea.   The pace! The frenzied pace!

The groupies can get that one.   Strike a pose, there's nothing to it, VOGUE.

Play was interrupted while David left the field to reapply deodorant.   Certain that no one was looking, he reached for another fondant fancy.

Mid-swing, it suddenly occurred to him that he may have left the iron on.
