Flowers teach children to play

The money we raised during our flower festival in May 2006 has helped street children in Asunción to learn to play, and to feel valued.

The truck purchased with the funds we sent
The first activity is always a bible story
Sticking at tables outside
Games on the grass outside

A huge thank you to everyone who made the flower festival happen, and who came along, and put a smile on these children's faces!

Letter from Asunción about this truck

St Andrew's Cathedral in Asunción has used these funds to buy a vehicle to serve as a mobile toy library, going out to poor schools and neighbourhoods.

The children are usually awestruck when they see the library's toys, not able to choose what to do first.

Poor Paraguayan children lack stimulation - they don't have the toys we in the West are used to. They also often lack interaction with kindly and interested adults.

Toy library play sessions run from 8am - noon at a chosen location, and the event is publicised a few days before. On the day, St Andrews' staff and volunteers set up play corners, each dedicated to a different type of play:

  • dressing up & children's make-up
  • mobile toys
  • a quiet area with books
  • a soft toy area for the under-2s
  • a play house (with cooker, tea-set & ironing board)
  • board games & puzzles
  • a zoo with animals

If 100 children turn up, they are divided into groups:

  • indoor play (see above)
  • games on the grass
  • sticking at tables.
