| Stand Up Against Poverty, 2006 |
|
| |
|
|
From Australia to Malawi to the Philippines, people seeking an end to global poverty were asked to ‘Stand Up Against Poverty' on the weekend of 15/16 October 2006. The ‘stand up' action was organized by GCAP, the international campaigning network for which Make Poverty History was the UK platform.
The aim was to get large numbers of people standing together in solidarity so that world leaders can see that global poverty is still an issue that people care about.
So on Sunday 15 October, the congregation of our 10:30am service gathered together outside the church to pray against global poverty. The prayer was led by Bishop James of Knaresborough, and we also observed a minute's silence.
The record was smashed by 23.5 million people (23,542,614 to be exact)...
with Guinness World Records spokesperson Craig Glenday saying: "By the time
we get all the figures in it will be the largest single coordinated movement
of people in the history of the Guinness World Records".
